Cation Exchange Resin

Key Features

TRILITE® SAC (strong acid cation) exchange resin uses sulfuric acid with a functional group,
and has salt-splitting capacity, allowing it to exchange cations throughout the entire pH range. It demonstrates stability against organic solvents, strong acids, strong alkalis, and reducing agents, making it the most widely used resin.

The typical SAC exchange resin is a styrene-based gel type, and a porous type with enhanced porosity can also be selected through a special production process.

The chemical structure of a porous type SAC exchange resin is the same as a gel type, but it has many macropores on its surface and has a higher surface area than the gel type. The porous type ion exchange resin has a high porosity and surface area, allowing for effective ion exchange even in nonpolar or high-viscosity solutions. The porous type resin has better reaction rate and decolorization ability compared to gel type, and it has high resistance to organic pollution, swelling strength, and shrinkage strength. However, due to the higher moisture content inside, its exchange capacity may be lower than that of gel type resin.

When selecting a SAC exchange resin, using the gel type may be more cost-effective for general water treatment or treatment of polar solutions with less severe conditions, such as low viscosity solutions, since the production process of the porous type is more complex and therefore the unit price is higher. In the case of porous type, high performance can be expected when used for harsh processing conditions (high temperature, high pressure), non-polar solvent treatment, and high viscosity liquid treatment.
